The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden (1911) by Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) is a classic children’s novel. The story is about a young ten-year-old rude and spoiled girl named Mary Lennox, the child of wealthy parents who becomes an orphan in her house alone in India. She is sent to live with her uncle in England and her cousins and discovers a key that unlocks a neglected garden. One night she hears crying and finds a little boy named Colin in a hidden room of the house. Colin cannot walk and has not been outside the house in years, so Mary decides to escort Colin in his wheelchair out into the secret garden for some fresh air. With the help of her cousins, Colin learns to walk in the park, and they rebuild it by nurturing it until it flourishes to become a beautiful in-bloom garden.
