A Christmas Carol (1843) by Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is a ghost story of Christmas. The story follows the wealthy and grumpy man named Ebenezer Scrooge, who dislikes Christmas and refuses a Christmas dinner invitation from his nephew Fred. Ebenezer is averse to spending money, giving money to the poor, and would prefer to spend Christmas all alone in his large home. On Christmas Eve, while all alone, he is visited by a ghost named Jacob Marley, who died on Christmas Eve a number of years ago. Jacob, while alive, was a man similar in character to Ebenezer, and he comes to warn Ebenezer not to be like him or otherwise he will be doomed to be trapped forever as an earthly ghost. After that, Ebenezer encounters a visit from more ghosts and finally embraces the spiritual meaning behind Christmas. Illustrations within this book are the original illustrations by John Leech.
